| Magnecomp Corporation Career Opportunities |
Opportunity Snapshot
In this high impact role you will set direction for equipment and tooling throughout our entire company -- we are looking for an individual with the entrepreneurial initiative to explore and recommend new ideas. You'll work on challenging projects involving cutting edge materials and processes to control manufacturing at nanotechnology levels. Our Temecula location is a development and R&D facility, and we work "without a lot of walls" in a collaborative, non-bureaucratic, and fast-paced environment.
You will develop and analyze equipment and tooling used to manufacture suspension assemblies. To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have precision machine design experience, including equipment, tooling, and peripherals, as well as the ability to communicate design information to people with varying levels of technical expertise. You also will need experience developing both equipment and manufacturing processes, from idea through development up to production. We're looking for a creative professional with intellectual curiosity who truly enjoys digging in to understand the nature of the problem and develop a solution.
Magnecomp Precision Technology (MPT) offers leading innovations in suspension assembly solutions from design through to rapid prototyping followed by high volume production. Our solutions are found in a wide variety of applications and products, from computers (of course) to MP3 players and GPS devices, and MPT innovations directly impact our customers' ability to increase disk drive capacity. In November 2007 MPT became part of $8 billion TDK, a well-capitalized and highly profitable global leader in digitization and advanced information networking.
What Else You'll Bring to the Table
In addition to the qualifications detailed above, you'll need:
While we try to keep travel to a minimum, you should be prepared to travel both domestically and internationally in this role. Domestically you may call on vendors tow or three times a year, and you may travel to Asia one or twice a year for three to six weeks.
What's in It for You
High impact and visibility -- As our sole Machine Design Engineer, we'll look to you to become the in-house subject matter expert. Because we are a smaller company, you will report to the Director of Engineering and have access to senior decision makers. That means you have the potential to turn ideas into products quickly, and your successes will be noticed.
Unique challenges -- not only will you solve problems on the nano scale, but you'll take on complex challenges; for example, our products are precision springs that are also electrical conduits but must be highly resistant to shock and corrosion. Our engineers say they enjoy applying fundamental engineering principles to make a significant impact on output and/or precision.
Great work environment -- you'll work with a great group of R&D professionals who value teamwork and mutual support. Our culture is highly professional and you'll find many individuals with deep experience. At the same time, we are open to fresh ideas and input.
Excellent compensation -- in addition to a competitive salary and performance based variable bonus potential, we offer a comprehensive benefits package.
More About Your Role
If you're a good fit for this position, you already know most of what this job entails. However, to be sure we're providing a complete picture, here are some details.
Reporting to the Director, USA Engineering, you will join a team that also includes a Process Development Manager and six Technicians and Engineers. In general your mission will be to provide mechanical and system integration of tools; however, we'll also look to you to be flexible as a team member, as there are no hard and fast rules about who does what. For example, while you will have no direct reports, you will provide leadership to the Technicians and others, particularly when you are serving as a Project Manager.
You will be involved in product development from the beginning, including providing input on our product roadmap and acting as a resource to the Product Design Engineers. In some cases your activities will be pure R&D, developing new technologies, and in others you will partner with your counterparts in Thailand and China to recognize needs and identify opportunities, and then put together proposals. Generally we use outside vendors, here and in Asia, to do the bulk of the machine design, but you will design key parts and provide direction to the vendors. We have a production line set up in Temecula for testing, development, and analysis.
Your specific activities will include:
Keys to Success
To excel in this role you will leverage your interpersonal and leadership skills to get a good deal of your work done through others. You will coordinate among a number of internal and external contributors and your success will depend on your ability to get everyone aligned on the same goals. In addition, in order to be an outstanding Machine Design Engineer, you will:
If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity for you, and you meet the minimum qualifications, we want to hear from you!
Who We Are
Magnecomp Precision Technology (MPT) is a premier precision suspension assembly manufacturer serving a global customer base in the data storage and electronics industries. MPT was created through the 2005 merger between the Data Storage Division of Magnecomp International Limited and KR Precision Public Company Limited. In November 2007 MPT was purchased by TDK Corp. With manufacturing plants located both in Thailand and China, and a Technology center located in California USA, MPT is positioned close to its customers' design and manufacturing centers.
Suspension assemblies hold the read/write heads above the surface of the spinning disks in disk drives. They are critical components to the reliability and performance of disk drives. With the help of our technologies, disk drive manufacturers produce drives that aim to satisfy the world's growing demand for data storage.
