Opportunity Snapshot
This position offers you the opportunity to help influence our company's future; not only will you develop products with customers, but we also are looking for an individual with the entrepreneurial initiative to explore and recommend new ideas. You'll work on challenging projects involving cutting edge materials and processes to control vibration at nanotechnology levels, driving those projects from idea up to production, including some hands on involvement in making and testing parts. Our Temecula location is a development and R&D facility, and we work "without a lot of walls" in a collaborative, non-bureaucratic, and fast-paced environment.
You will design high precision hard disk drive (HDD) suspensions and product features to support our product roadmap servicing key customers in HDD manufacturing. To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have experience designing systems with precision vibration and modal control, and a solid foundation in mechanics and vibration. You also will need FEA experience along with an understanding of the math behind it; ANSYS experience is a plus. We're looking for a creative professional with intellectual curiosity who truly enjoys digging in to understand the nature of the problem and develop a solution.
Magnecomp Precision Technology (MPT) offers leading innovations in suspension assembly solutions from design through to rapid prototyping followed by high volume production. Our solutions are found in a wide variety of applications and products, from computers (of course) to MP3 players and GPS devices, and MPT innovations directly impact our customers' ability to increase disk drive capacity. In November 2007 MPT became part of $8 billion TDK, a well-capitalized and highly profitable global leader in digitization and advanced information networking.
What Else You'll Bring to the Table
In addition to the qualifications detailed above, you'll need:
What's in It for You
High impact and visibility -- because we are a smaller company, you will report to the Director of Engineering and have access to senior decision makers. That means you have the potential to turn ideas into products quickly, and your successes will be noticed.
Unique challenges -- not only will you solve problems on the nano scale, but you'll take on complex challenges; for example, our products are precision springs that are also electrical conduits but must be highly resistant to shock and corrosion. Our engineers say they enjoy applying fundamental engineering principles to make a significant impact on output and/or precision.
Great work environment -- you'll work with a great group of R&D professionals who value teamwork and mutual support. Our culture is highly professional and you'll find many individuals with deep experience. At the same time, we are open to fresh ideas and input.
Excellent compensation -- in addition to a competitive salary and performance based variable bonus potential, we offer a comprehensive benefits package.

While you will report to the Director, USA Engineering, your "to do" list also will be influenced by from the senior management team. The Advance Product Design Group includes two other Engineers and for the most part each of you will focus on your own projects, although there is a good deal of mutual support. On larger projects you may team with another Engineer. At any given time you can expect to be working on one main project and two or three smaller ones.
In a nutshell you will develop building blocks; for example, for a new product feature you will analyze the data, evaluate performance, get feedback from the marketplace, and then create the design, getting input from Machine and Process Engineers. You will then hand the design over to engineers in our factories in China and Thailand who use the designs in specific customer programs. Typically a project lasts from 6 to 18 months.
More specifically, your activities will include:
You may travel on occasion in this role, such as visiting customer sites in Silicon Valley, Colorado, or Minnesota, and perhaps once or twice a year to our plants in Asia.
